Union Pacific 844 - South Central Express Heritage Tour part three

Union Pacific 844 was on display at Kansas City Union Station over the 2006 Memorial Day Weekend. On the morning of Tuesday, May 30th, the train would depart Kansas City, Missouri, and head to Fairbury, Nebraska. UP 844 and the South Central Express Heritage Tour (SCEHT) were on the return portion of the trip and were heading back to Cheyenne, Wyoming.

UP 844 and the SCEHT are on the return leg of a multi-state tour. The train arrived at Kansas City Union Station, from Claremore, Oklahoma, on May 28, 2006. On the morning of May 30th, the train was preparing to depart Kansas City for its run to Fairbury, Nebraska, where it would spend the night.

UP 844 on the move

UP 844 is eastbound at Swingster Road in Bonnor Springs, KS. UP 5989 and UP 8288 are stopped.

The chase was a short one for me. I only chased the train from Kansas City to Topeka, Kansas, catching it in two different locations. The first stop was a Bonnor Springs, Kansas. Here I found an eastbound loaded coal trains stopped Swingster Road of the UP Kansas Subdivision. Soon, UP 844 came west passing the stopped coal train.

UP 844 wasn't wasting any time once it was clear of the Kansas City area. I barely got ahead of it west of Midland, Kansas, and east of Williamstown, Kansas. I stopped along highway US 59 and photographed the locomotive as it crossed over Buck Creek. Buck Creek is about halfway between the two Kansas towns. The creek is at, approximately, milepost (MP) 46.4 of UP's Kansas Subdivision.

  1. Beautiful shots! We may have seen each other in Topeka and not known it. :-) I'm pretty sure I went there that year to see it.

    1. Thanks, Shelly. It's possible. I did take some photographs of it on the western edge of Topeka. However, I didn't like the end result, so those will stay in the digital file cabinet.
