A Union Pacific Stack Train Curves Toward An Old Santa Fe Signal Bridge

October 17, 2008. Fort Madison, Iowa.

A Union Pacific trackage rights train is about to pass under the old Santa Fe style signal bridge at Fort Madison. The train is heading westward on BNSF's Chillicoth Subdivision. The signal on the right is indicating that another train has been lined west on the right-hand main.

  2. Thank you, Shelly Gunderson. Union Pacific runs a number of trackage rights trains over the BNSF's Transcon route between Kansas City and Chicago. UP may even run some west of KC, but I can't recall for sure.

  3. Shelly Gunderson it's so common now to see so many different leased pool locomotives in pools in places east coast railroads never were 20 yrs ago. now so common to see to Northfolk Southern thoroughbreds everywhere out in California storming Cajon Pass the Rocky Mountains up in Washington lol

  5. Just to be clear, NS locomotives aren't lease pool locomotives, unless the locomotives were bought by a leasing company and never repainted (but then they are renumbered to the leasing company). When you see NS and CSX locomotives off their home rails in the West it's either because they are run-through locomotives, or NS and CSX are paying back horsepower hours to another railroad. The same happens with the western railroads when their locomotives are off their home rails. Seeing other railroads' locomotives off of their home rails does make for some colorful photography opportunities.
