  2. I'd prefer a path, rather than stairs, but I guess the stairs keep people on the trail and not damaging the other ground Tom Gatermann Nice one

  4. Thanks, Jim Robertson. I think they built the stairs, as you said, to keep people on the path better. This is a very high foot-traffic area because the trail is right next to the visitors center. I also think the stairs help since this is a rather steep climb over a short distance. The amount of switch/loop backs that would be needed to have made a path-only assent would have scarred the land a lot more.
