Yesterday, CSX train M560-14 came through East Syracuse, New York, with a pair of Quebec North Shore & Labrador (QNS&L) locomotives trailing behind the leading CSX locomotives. QNSL 408 and QNSL 409 were the third and fourth locomotives on the train.

QNS&L is owned by Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC). The railway operates on 257 miles (414 kilometers) of track in the Canadian provinces of Quebec (QC), and Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). QNS&L's original line opened in 1954, connecting Sept-ÃŽles, QC., with the mining community at Schefferville, QC.

QNS&L interchanges with Chemin de fer Arnaud Railway (CFAQ, formerly ARND) at Kemat Junction, with Tshiuetin Rail Transportation Incorporated (TSH, formerly TRT) at Emeril Junction, with Wabush Lake Railway at Wabush Lake Junction, and the Western Labrador Rail Services at Bloom Junction, near Labrador City.

I don't know why these locomotives were so far from the home rails. Both locomotives were built in 1998 by General Electric as C44-9Ws. It's possible that after twenty-four years of service they are due to be rebuilt. They two locomotives are definitely showing a bit of wear and tear.
