Yesterday with some mid-morning snow falling, I caught CSXT 214 leading M561-19 (manifest train, Selkirk, New York, to Cincinnati, Ohio) at Memphis, New York. The train is westbound on Track 2 of CSX's Rochester Subdivision. In the distance, obscured by the snow the train is passing through Control Point (CP) 300 at Warner's New York.

M561-18 is stopped at CP 306 as a crew member tries to find the cause of CSXT 214's problem.

A short time after the train passed through Memphis, it made an emergency stop at Jordan, New York, due to a loss of the computer display screens in the cab. The problem was a loose battery knife switch on the lead locomotive that caused the unit to lose partial power.

  1. I'll bet an emergency stop like that throws a monkey wrench into scheduling. Everything has computer screens these days it seems.
How di you find out the cause of the stop?

    1. This issue definitely put a wrench in morning's flow of traffic. The line was already single tracked due to a signaling issue further west, and this compounded the situation. I was able to learn about the problems by listening to the radio chatter.

  2. Nice snowy action shot! We used to listen to train chatter but haven't kept up on it and not sure of the channels these days. It was fun and interesting.

    1. Thank you, Shelly.

There are a lot of the railroad scanners on Broadcastify. You might take a look for your area and see if any are listed. Then you can listen to them via your phone or computer.
