UP 5561 Waiting on the Springfield Subdivision With The Gateway Arch
Union Pacific 5561 waits on UP's Springfield Subdivision, near S. 19th Street, with the Gateway Arch in the background. The train was waiting for clearance to proceed east to Valley Junction, where it would take an interchange track and roll onto the Union Pacific's Chester Subdivision to head south.Valley Junction is a major junction in the St. Louis area.

ReplyDeleteAs far as how many carriages a locomotive can haul, it would depend on the horsepower of the particular locomotive. A locomotive, like the one pictured here, can probably pull 40-50 cars on its own, depending on what type of cargo the carriages are hauling. This train had two locomotives on the front, and I believe a third locomotive pushing on the end of the train, with about 100+ cars.
