This is the Jan Hus Monument in Old Town Prague Square. Jan Hus was burnt at the stake after refusing to recant his reformist views, by the Roman Catholic Church. His death was seen as an outrage by the Czech people and was one of the catalysts that led to what would become known as the Hussite Wars. The building in the background is the Palác Kinských, and it is home to part of the National Gallery (Národní Galerie). There are twenty-seven of these white crosses embedded in the paving stones of Old Town Square to commemorate the execution on June 21, 1621, of twenty-seven nobles who took part in an uprising against the Habsburg Monarchy.  Update: Please see the first comment below for more information on the crosses.
