Visitors Center at Hoover Dam Looking toward the visitors' center and some of the power line towers at Hoover Dam . In the upper left corner of the image you can see the Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. At the time that I took this image, the bridge was under construction. Before the bridge was completed in 2010, vehicular traffic on US 93 had to cross over the top of the dam, which required a security check fro every car traveling over it. Hoover Dam A view looking down, from the top of Hoover Dam. The dam is 726 feet tall, and weighs more than 6.6 million tons. At the bottom water from the Colorado River and Lake Mead are being released. On the back side of the dam, large intake towers feed water into the dam's turbines to produce electricity. Hoover Dam intake towers Seen in this photograph are two of the four large intake towers at Hoover Dam. These two towers are on the Arizona side of the dam, while the other two are on the Nevada side of the dam. The intake towers draw water into the dam to provide energy to turn the electrical turbines in the dam's power plant. After powering the turbines, the water is released at the base of the dam . Looking out at Lake Mead on the Colorado River, from the top of Hoover Dam . Lake Mead was at a much lower water level than it had been in years past, as can be seen from the higher water level mark in this photograph.
